240h route assumptions

  • Example origin airports: SFO, LHR, YYZ, SYD
  • Mainland entry / exit: PEKPVG
  • First stop after mainland China: ICN
  • Planned stay areas: Beijing, Shaanxi, Shanghai

Why this route shape works: Different entry/exit ports: fly into Beijing, leave mainland China from Shanghai to a third country/region.

Watchpoint: Do not book PVG back to your origin country. Your onward leg after Shanghai must be a different country/region such as ICN, NRT, HKG, or SIN.

Who this is for

  • First-time visitors who want the iconic landmarks — Forbidden City, Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, Yu Garden — without overcommitting on time.
  • Travelers comfortable with one HSR move every 3-4 days (less than a full domestic-flight reshuffle).
  • History-leaning trips: 70% of must-sees here are pre-1949 imperial / dynastic sites.

Skip this template if

  • You want modern China (skyscrapers, food halls, tech): pick South Coast or Yangtze Delta instead.
  • You only have 7 days: drop Xi'an or condense Beijing to 3 nights.
  • You're traveling in extreme July-August heat — Beijing routinely hits 35°C+ and the Great Wall is brutal.

Best season

April-mid June and mid September-October are ideal. November is also good if you accept cold. Avoid Chinese New Year week (mid-Jan to mid-Feb varies by year) and the October 1-7 Golden Week — domestic tourism crushes every site.

Daily budget

US $90-160 / person / day (mid-range hotel, mix of street and sit-down meals, paid attractions, public transit). Add ~US $80 for Great Wall private driver, ~US $90 for the Beijing↔Xi'an↔Shanghai HSR pair.

Where to stay, by city

General district recommendations — we don't recommend specific hotels because availability and pricing shift constantly. Use the district guidance to filter on any booking site.

Beijing

Wangfujing or Qianmen for first-time tourists (walking distance to Forbidden City, Tiananmen, Temple of Heaven). Dongcheng hutong courtyards for atmosphere but less convenient transit.

Xi'an

Inside the City Wall, near the Bell Tower (钟楼) — walkable to Muslim Quarter, restaurants, subway Line 2. Avoid the area near the airport unless you have an early flight.

Shanghai

Former French Concession (Xuhui or Jing'an) for café culture and walkability; The Bund (Huangpu) for first-time skyline views; Lujiazui for the Pudong skyline experience.

Day-by-day plan

One day per row. Morning / afternoon / evening blocks, plus what to eat and how to move around.

Day 1

Beijing · Arrival, slow walk to acclimate

Morning

Land at PEK / PKX. Take Airport Express or Daxing Express to city. Hotel check-in, shower, jet-lag walk.

Afternoon

Easy walk: Wangfujing Street → Forbidden City exterior (don't try to enter today). Get a SIM/eSIM working.

Evening

Early dinner — try Donghuamen night market or a hotpot place. Sleep early.

What to eat

Beijing zhajiangmian (noodles), Peking duck (book Quanjude or Siji Minfu ahead).

Transport notes

Subway Line 1 or 5. Cash + Alipay both work; Apple Pay still spotty.

Day 2

Beijing · Forbidden City + Tiananmen

Morning

Forbidden City — book entry ticket 7 days in advance via the official WeChat mini-program. Enter from Meridian Gate, exit from Gate of Divine Prowess. 3-4 hours.

Afternoon

Jingshan Park (climb for the rooftop view of Forbidden City) → walk south to Tiananmen Square (security check + passport required).

Evening

Hutong dinner — try Nanluoguxiang or Dashilan area. Lots of small jiaozi places.

What to eat

Old Beijing snacks: douzhi (fermented mung bean drink — acquired taste), jianbing breakfast crepe, lamb skewers.

Transport notes

Walk + subway. Forbidden City entrance is north (Meridian Gate); exit is north too (Gate of Divine Prowess).

Day 3

Beijing · Great Wall — full day

Morning

Mutianyu section, ~70 min by car from city. Book a private driver (~US $80) or join a group tour. Cable car up to Tower 14, walk to 20-23 (less crowded sections).

Afternoon

Toboggan down (US $10) or hike back. Lunch at base — usually mediocre, manage expectations.

Evening

Return to Beijing. Easy night — Temple of Heaven East Gate area for street food.

What to eat

Pre-pack snacks for the Wall. There's only one restaurant strip at Mutianyu.

Transport notes

Private driver is the fastest. Public bus 916 + transfer works but adds 2 hours each way.

Day 4

Beijing · Temple of Heaven + 798

Morning

Temple of Heaven park — go early (7am), watch locals do tai chi, fan dancing. Visit Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.

Afternoon

798 Art Zone — converted electronics factory, now galleries and cafés. Casual.

Evening

Sanlitun for nightlife or quiet dinner in Gulou area. Pack for early HSR tomorrow.

What to eat

798 has decent café food. Sanlitun has international + craft beer.

Transport notes

Subway from Temple of Heaven East Gate to 798 takes ~45 min.

Day 5

Xi'an · HSR transit + city wall arrival

Morning

Take G-train Beijing West Railway Station → Xi'an North (~4h30, ¥515 second class, ¥820 first). Lunch on the train (bring snacks or use the dining car — it's basic).

Afternoon

Arrive Xi'an North, subway Line 2 to Bell Tower (~30 min). Hotel drop-off. Rent a bicycle on the City Wall for the late-afternoon ride (¥45, 90 minutes around the full circuit).

Evening

Muslim Quarter food crawl — start at Beiyuanmen, walk in.

What to eat

Roujiamo (Chinese hamburger), liangpi (cold noodles), biang biang noodles, persimmon cake.

Transport notes

Bring passport — HSR entry requires it. Arrive 45 min before departure for security.

Day 6

Xi'an · Terracotta Warriors

Morning

Bus 5 (¥7) or Didi (~¥80) from Bell Tower area to Terracotta Warriors site (~1h). Enter Pit 1 first (the famous one), then Pit 3, then Pit 2. Allow 3 hours total.

Afternoon

Return to city. Optional: Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayan Ta) and Tang Dynasty culture street.

Evening

Last Muslim Quarter pass for souvenirs. Pack for tomorrow's HSR.

What to eat

Lunch at the Terracotta site is overpriced — eat before going or wait until you're back in town.

Transport notes

Bus 5 is the budget option, runs from Xi'an Railway Station East Square. Avoid scammers offering 'private tours' from the bus station.

Day 7

Shanghai · HSR + The Bund first impression

Morning

Xi'an North → Shanghai Hongqiao (~6h30, ¥670 second class). Or fly XIY → SHA / PVG (~2h flight + airport time = comparable).

Afternoon

Arrive Hongqiao, Metro Line 2 to People's Square (~30 min). Hotel check-in.

Evening

The Bund at sunset and after dark — both views (Pudong skyline lit up). Walk Nanjing Road back.

What to eat

Try xiaolongbao at Jia Jia Tang Bao (Huanghe Road) — cash-only, no English, but the real deal.

Transport notes

Shanghai Metro is excellent — buy a single-trip ticket from machines or use Alipay's metro QR.

Day 8

Shanghai · Old Shanghai + concessions

Morning

Yu Garden + Yuyuan Bazaar area. Garden entry ¥45. Bazaar is touristy but the architecture is real.

Afternoon

Walk the Former French Concession — Wukang Road, Anfu Road, Yongkang Road. Café-hop.

Evening

Tianzifang for shopping (overrated but ticks the box) or dinner in Xintiandi.

What to eat

Lunch: Nanxiang Steamed Bun at Yu Bazaar (always a queue but it moves). Dinner: hairy crab if October-November, otherwise xiaolongbao crawl.

Transport notes

Walk + occasional Didi. Concessions are dense but manageable.

Day 9

Shanghai · Modern Shanghai

Morning

Lujiazui — Shanghai Tower observation deck (book ahead, ¥180) or Jin Mao Tower (cheaper view, ¥120).

Afternoon

M50 art district (1933 Old Millfun also nearby) or Power Station of Art if more time.

Evening

Rooftop bar for last-night view — Bar Rouge or Flair (touristy but the view sells). Or do a Huangpu River cruise (¥120, 50 min).

What to eat

Splurge dinner: try shengjianbao at Yang's Fry Dumplings (multiple locations).

Transport notes

Lujiazui Metro stop is right at the base of the towers.

Day 10

Shanghai · Departure

Morning

Light morning: another concession walk, museum if time (Shanghai Museum is free with passport ID).

Afternoon

Maglev from Longyang Rd to PVG (7 min, ¥50). Or take Metro Line 2 if heading to PVG (~75 min total).

Evening

Onward flight to your third country/region. Allow 3+ hours at PVG for international departure.

What to eat

Last xiaolongbao breakfast. PVG food is mediocre — eat before security.

Transport notes

Maglev only goes to PVG, not SHA Hongqiao. Confirm your airport before deciding.

Itinerary-specific tips

  • Book HSR tickets 15-30 days in advance for best seats — Trip.com is the practical English-language option for foreign visitors.
  • Xi'an airport (XIY) is 1 hour from city; build buffer if you're flying out from Xi'an instead of HSR-ing to Shanghai.
  • Carry your Boarding Kit print-out — different entry/exit ports (PEK in, PVG out) sometimes trip airline check-in agents.

FAQ

Can I do this itinerary in 7 days instead of 10?

Yes but tight. Cut Xi'an to 1.5 days (skip Big Wild Goose Pagoda), Beijing to 3 nights (skip 798), Shanghai to 2 nights. You'll feel rushed and the Beijing↔Xi'an HSR is a half-day burn on the shortened version. Many people regret cutting Beijing.

Why exit from PVG (Shanghai) and not PEK (Beijing)?

Both work for 240h. PVG to a third country has the most flight options (Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong all 2-4h). PEK has fewer cheap onward options. The natural flow is also east-bound: more time-zone-friendly if heading home to North America.

Is the Terracotta Warriors worth the Xi'an detour?

Yes for first-timers — it's genuinely one-of-a-kind and the scale only registers in person. The detour costs you ~10 hours of HSR + 1 day in Xi'an versus just doing Beijing → Shanghai direct. If you're not history-curious, the answer flips to no.

Day-by-day timing and pricing are estimates as of 2026-05-18. HSR fares fluctuate ±10%; attraction tickets and hotel prices vary by season. Verify schedules and book in advance.
