12306 vs Trip.com for China train tickets
A simple guide to choosing 12306 or Trip.com for China train tickets, especially if you use a foreign passport and foreign card.
Start with 12306 if you want to book directly with China Railway. Consider Trip.com if you prefer its booking interface and support, and accept the total shown at checkout. Both still require accurate passenger details and a successfully issued ticket.

- Open the official English site; register or sign in and add the passenger.
- Enter passport details accurately. The FAQ describes “verified” and “ready to be verified” passenger statuses; follow the instructions for your own status.
- Choose stations, date, train and seat class, then complete payment.
- Check the issued ticket’s passenger, stations and departure details.
On Trip.com
- Search your route and date, then choose a train and seat class.
- Add passenger and contact information, checking the passport number and name.
- Review the complete price and cancellation terms before paying.
- Wait for ticket confirmation in the order; a booking request alone is not proof of a seat.

Compare the refund amount, too
A refundable ticket can still have a deduction. 12306 publishes different refund charges according to how far ahead of departure you cancel, with exceptions for changed tickets. Follow the current rule for your ticket rather than assuming “refundable” means the full amount back.
On Trip.com, inspect the cancellation quote for the complete order: ticket refund, any platform service charge, and optional products may be separate items.
