Choose your day

Garden paths, the museum courtyard and Pingjiang Road, with an evening train back to Shanghai.

Choose Garden & museum only with both reservations confirmed. Canal streets is the outdoor alternative. Stop order and time bands are editorial suggestions; source dates are listed below.

Fit, reservations and preparation

Fits when

  • You sleep in Shanghai and want one full day in Suzhou without changing hotels
  • You already have both attraction reservations and can book the two trains
  • You are happy to walk a few kilometres over the day and use the metro

Not for

  • Mondays: the Suzhou Museum is closed (except national public holidays)
  • You have checked luggage with you or land in Shanghai the same morning
  • You want quiet gardens: this is the busy core of Suzhou, not a low-crowd alternative

Prepare before

  • Successful garden ticket and museum reservation for each traveller; passport entry confirmed
  • Two train tickets for your date, with the correct stations
  • Original passport and a working payment method

One day and one night in Suzhou: the garden and museum, Pingjiang Road, an evening on Shantang Street, a hotel, and a train back to Shanghai the next morning.

Choose Garden & museum only with both reservations confirmed. Canal streets is the outdoor alternative. Stop order and time bands are editorial suggestions; source dates are listed below.

Fit, reservations and preparation

Fits when

  • You can stay overnight in Suzhou
  • Both attraction reservations are confirmed for your passport
  • You want an evening canal walk without an evening train deadline

Not for

  • You must sleep in Shanghai tonight
  • Either attraction reservation is still unresolved; use the canal-streets plan
  • The museum is closed on your date

Prepare before

  • Confirmed garden ticket and museum reservation
  • Outbound train and return train for the following date
  • Hotel booking, check-in confirmation and Chinese address
  • Passport and a working payment method

A full day of canal streets: Shanghai → Suzhou Railway Station → Pingjiang Road and lunch → Shantang Street → Suzhou Railway Station → Shanghai that evening.

This plan covers public streets, not ticketed interiors or boat trips. Check weather and local closures for your day.

Fit, reservations and preparation

Fits when

  • An attraction reservation did not work for your passport or phone
  • You prefer canals, street photography and food to ticketed sights
  • You need to return to Shanghai tonight

Not for

  • A garden or museum interior is your main reason to visit
  • You need a route without walking or steps
  • Bad weather makes an outdoor day unsuitable

Prepare before

  • Book your two trains and select 苏州 (Suzhou Railway Station)
  • Save the Chinese place names and your return train details
  • Bring your passport, weather protection and a working payment method
