Your first-night booking doubles as proof at the airline counter.

Ordinary visa and visa-free visitors can skip this. If your entry relies on the 240-hour visa-free transit rule, the airline may ask for your first-night address and onward ticket before boarding, so book a hotel whose Chinese address you can show, and confirm the route itself before you pay for flights.
